Time Conscious

I can't begin to figure out what these people were thinking when they affixed a giant clock to the cement "tower" built onto their house...facing the 2 lane highway running in front of their land. I mean...it's not like it's going to help THEM keep track of the time... Perhaps they thought morning commuters to "the flats" would want to know whether they are "on time" or not....as they maneuver the twists and turns of Highway 46. At any rate...this is one of the stranger houses in the high country...

Ice Hails

It hailed a few evenings ago
and when the fury
had passed
puddles of cold ice
lay on the brown ground...
so I found my thoughts
turning
to the seasonal churning
soon to be up on us...

later...the fog
hung heavy
between sky and earth
veiling the valley
in a shroud of fine white................

An Abundance of Mushrooms

Mushrooms...
some no doubt of
the poisonous variety...
are in abundance this year
on the land...and on one
photo taking walk
a few weeks ago my daughter pointed out how boldly they grow out of the ground... fragile domes pushing up and through the earth from which they spring........

I'm not sure what creatures these caterpillars will eventually become... as they go about life cocooned in these large microcosms... dozens... wrapped in the trees of Boulder Canyon... miniature worlds existing in a time and space continuum of their own.......

August Fires

It's been a while since I've posted any pictures of sun's setting light...despite there having been some beauties this month......as August's sun sets have been a fiery gold...rather than pink or purple hued......

Deer Peeking

Told a friend who's squeamish when it comes to spiders that I would post another image...so here it is.
A couple of weeks ago...from my vehicle... I managed to get a hurried shot of a deer...one of two...hanging out for the second day in a row...munching on leaves...just a couple of feet from the steep mountain road...before a sheriff's vehicle pulled up behind me...and I knew it was time to stop blocking the road and continue on my way...

On Encounters with Spiders

Spiders...nonewithstanding their role as tricksters...have never bothered me much...living in the mountains...I've learned to leave them alone to go about their way...as I go about mine. This Boulder spider...dangling from an invisible web not too far from my head...I must admit was kind of scary...he was huge...hairy...striped like a tiger...and looked mean as heck....
As soon as I snapped the first shot however...he sped up his web towards the ceiling...showing once again that most creatures that humans fear....would...in fact... rather just avoid the potential confrontation...........

Coyotes Revisited

Coyote comes calling some times...
his cries circumference my home
in melancholy
only he can send forth...
it sounds like many have gathered
but I know only one
has journeyed for the ceremony...
ventriloquist throwing his voice
to add dramatic effect
to the mysteriousness
of being awakened mid night by song...
reverberations long and slow...
howlings high and low
lulling visions of long ago..........

Had the great fortune to witness rainbows over Denver on Saturday...for some reason... they always seem to come in pairs... these were full arched and particularly full of colour... especially where they touched the earth.... and infused the skyscape in a light of gold......
